Rihanna’s New Luxury Brand!

I’ve been a fan of Rihanna’s since Pon De Replay first came out back in 2005. It has been exciting to see how far she has grown in the past 13 years! After getting her career started in music, she has expanded her empire to beauty products, make up, sneakers, and lingerie. However her latest endeavor is her most impressive yet.

Our very own Bad Gal Ri Ri will be creating a luxury line with Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, or LVMH. This is impressive for a multitude of reasons. She will be the first and youngest woman to ever create a line under the massive fashion conglomerate. The most recent line that was released under LVMH was Christian Lacroix… in 1987! The line is called “Fenty”, of course just like her last name and many other products. I am excited to see Rihanna’s complete fashion line and what else the future holds for Ri Ri!

The Notorious B.I.G., 5/21/72 – 3/9/97

May 21st, 1972 – The Notorious B.I.G. aka Biggie Smalls aka Christopher Wallace was born! As a native New Yorker, Biggie is a quintessential part of my childhood upbringing. In almost every home video we have, Biggie is bound to play in the background at some point.  In the mid 90’s everyone was wearing Coogi sweaters because they wanted to be as smooth and stylish as The Notorious B.I.G.

Unfortunately his life was cut short on March 9th, 1997 right here in Los Angeles. Though he was only on this Earth for a brief moment, his music and legacy will live on forever. I was barely three years old when he was killed, but over twenty years later I am still blasting his music. Though time will continue to pass, as a New Yorker Biggie’s music and life will always be celebrated. Below I have created a playlist of my favorite songs either by or featuring The Notorious B.I.G., comment on which one is your favorite!

The Current Dating Culture

Growing up I always admired my parents relationship. They have been together for about twenty-eight years, and this summer will make twenty-six years of marriage. Even the story of how they met is straight out of a fairy-tale. My uncle and father were friends as kids, and when the time was right he asked my uncle for permission to date my mom (aka, his big sister). Of course he was initially met with a big ole “hell no!” but the rest his history. They were around twenty-two and twenty-five when they got married. They were, and still are, always each other’s ride or die no matter the ups or downs. As a young child seeing this, I assumed that I would have the same life, married with kids and a nice home before the age of twenty-five.

Fast forward to 2019 and this scenario is quite rare. In the age of Social Media we are constantly on dating apps or comparing ourselves to others. This of course makes things difficult when it comes to dating. Everyone is looking for the next and newest person not to date, but to sleep with. Of course we’ve all had those nights when a little fun turns into a little more fun, but now it has become a lifestyle for many. It sucks.

I’ve had my fair share of fun, but after a while it’s exhausting to go through the same cycle. You meet someone, hit it off, then the question of sex is immediately brought up. Sometimes you’re lucky if they even try to get to know you. Some guys disappear as soon as they realize you would prefer to see a movie instead of seeing the back seat of their car.

Now I know this behavior is not new, and fairy tales are not real, but this Modern Dating Culture is out of control. People are contracting all sorts of incurable STD’s and it’s frightening. But besides that people are losing sight of what it means to be in a relationship. Just because someone doesn’t check off all of the proverbial boxes, it doesn’t mean they’re not good enough. I hate to blame it all on social media and television like I’m some eighty-year-old woman who has seen all there is to the world, HOWEVER, it certainly has something to do with it. We as a society are so obsessed with looking perfect and finding the perfect person, when in reality there is no such thing as perfection.

I’m not looking for prince charming but I definitely am tired of kissing so many frogs. What I am looking for someone who is not so caught up with this ridiculous dating culture. As I approach twenty-five I think about how much easier things must’ve been when my parents were dating. Though that was long ago and we live in a much different time now, I still long for a relationship like my parents. God forbid that I have to tell my future children that their father slid in my DM’s and then they came along. Though fairy tales are not real, I wish to meet someone that it willing to break out of this cycle, so we can live happily ever after.

Nobu Malibu!

On May 17th, 2001 my little brother and best buddy was born. According to my math that was 18 years ago! Time sure does fly, whew. So to celebrate this, we went to his favorite restaurant Nobu, located right over the PCH in Malibu.

I unfortunately did not see Miley Cyrus here seeing as this is one of her frequent go-to’s, but fortunately I did have a ton of delicious food. On their website it says they are “among the most Instagrammed places in the world”, this is probably due to the amazing patio view.

We had so much food that I can barely remember what I ate, but my two favorite dishes were the steak and the tempura lobster. A friend of mine told me that they saw Adam Sandler order Sloppy Joes off of the secret menu, I’m curious to know what other interesting dishes are included on there!

In my opinion, ordering a couple of things off of the menu is the best way to dine at Nobu. That way you will be able to decipher what you do and don’t like by trying everything!

I would definitely describe Nobu as a “chill” restaurant. The ambiance both inside and outside of the restaurant is very calming. If you are looking to relax by the beach and eat delicious food, Nobu is the place to go!

Westworld III!

The trailer just dropped for the third season of Westworld! Coincidentally my brother had asked me on Saturday if Westworld was ever coming back, I guess we’ve got our answer. If you have not yet seen or even heard of Westworld, you are missing out. Now that Game of Thrones is over I’m excited to get back into another incredible show.

The plot is derived from the 1973 sci-fi Western movie of the same name. The first season had similar characteristics to the movie, it focused mainly on saloons and cowboys, but the second season broadened it’s horizons and spread out to different “worlds”. It looks like they will be expanding further in season three!

The newest season does not come out until 2020, which gives me and other fans of the show plenty of time to catch up on the episodes. I am a huge fan of the Nolan Brothers work so I am excited to see where they take the next season. Take a look at the trailer here: Westworld III.

Mama’s Shelter!

I recently visited Mama’s Shelter right in Los Angeles for the first time. At my office we have a monthly BGM, Black Girl Magic, lunch to celebrate all the wonderful things us highly melanin-ated sisters are up to!

The weather was acting up, so we didn’t get to sit on the rooftop that I have heard so much about. Regardless, the restaurant was still gorgeous on the inside.

As we were waiting to be seated, we were introduced to the hostess Veda. She was so warm and welcoming! It was the perfect way to start off our BGM lunch.

We all ordered our food and it did not disappoint! We all shared a few orders of “Bougie Fries” which are Waffle fries sprinkled with Truffle oil, Furikake, and Parmesan.  As my main dish I ordered the avocado toast and added an egg on top… it was scrumptious!

The atmosphere was very relaxed and all of the waitresses were extremely kind. You can also book a room and stay at Mama’s Shelter.

Mama’s shelter is a very laid back and tasty restaurant, I hope when I return I am able to eat up on the roof top!

Game of Thrones: The End is Coming

Sunday is right around the corner so you know what that means…. Game of Thrones! As many of you know, this is the final season so plenty of people are speculating how it will all end. For a show with so much detail and time put into it’s story line, it’s actually quite difficult to guess what’ll happen next.

However, show runners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss created a Spotify playlist titled “Game of Thrones: The End is Coming” where each song title alludes to subtle hints at how it may all end. Of course we’ll never really know how it ends until it you know, ends… but it’s still fun to guess!

Check out the playlist below to see if you can figure out which songs apply to the plots, characters, and story lines of the final season of Game of Thrones!

Top TV Moms

Mother’s day is this Sunday! In my opinion a loving yet fierce mother is the key to the family foundation, (much like my momma!). Unfortunately not everyone gets to experience this, but luckily there were plenty of women on TV who played doting mothers. Many people from all generations can recall a few TV mothers that had an impact on their life.

Below are a few of my favorites, see if you recognize any and comment on which had the most impact on you!

Claire Huxtable (The Cosby Show) – Claire always knew how to teach her kids lessons with style and grace.

Carol Brady (The Brady Bunch) – Mrs. Brady was always very wise. Not only was she a great mother to her daughters, but she was also a fantastic step-mother to her three new sons!

Vivian “Aunt Viv” Banks (The Fresh Prince of Bel Air) – Now I know certain people prefer one Aunt Viv over the other, but I liked both! Both were very strong matriarch’s to the Banks family.

Wilma Flintstone & Betty Rubble (The Flintstones) – Wilma and Betty had a hard enough time dealing with their husbands antics, but imagine trying to raise two babies like Pebbles and Bam-Bam on top of that…. kudos!

Lily Munster (The Musnters) – Without Lily the Munsters would not have survived! Lily was able to maintain a house full of wacky family members and help them all cope with the fact that they didn’t quite look like everyone else in the neighborhood.

Samantha Stephens (Bewitched) – Samantha might hide a few things from Darren, but she is always fiercely protective of her family, especially little Tabitha!

Rochelle (Everybody Hates Chris) – Everyone in the neighborhood knows they better not mess with Rochelle or her family!

Jane Jetson (The Jetsons) – Jane was the ultimate renaissance woman! She was always hip to the newest fashions, was part of the Galaxy Women Historical Society, and was even awarded Miss Solar System. All while keeping balance and order in the Jetson household!

Morticia Addams (The Addams Family) – Morticia was always very kind, patient, and understanding with her kooky and spooky family.

Florida Evans (Good Times) – Florida is the main thing that kept the Evans family together! Even when James died (damn, damn, damn…!) she made sure her closely knit family stayed as such.

Catelyn Stark (Game of Thrones) – Catelyn is fiercely loyal and protective to her family and her kingdom. Luckily before her untimely passing, she was able teach her children everything she knew.

Linda Belcher (Bob’s Burgers) – Linda is the life of the party and the fiercest mom there is! She always looks on the bright side and always supports her family no matter how crazy the idea is!

IT’S FINALLY HERE… the Met Gala! If you are unaware the Met Gala occurs every year and is a fundraising event held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in NYC. Top designers create extravagant pieces based on the year’s theme for different celebrities.

This year’s theme was “Camp”. The idea was based of of Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on Camp”. Camp essentially is the art of being “extra”, but in the best way possible, so over-doing it is encouraged! I loooove the idea of camp and have always been inspired by figures like the Spice Girls, Cher, Prince, and many more who perfectly exhibit what it means to be “Camp”.

I’m so glad so many people went above and beyond on the pink carpet, below are my favorite looks from the night!
